Must have accessories for the Rivian R2
I was excited to get my R2, and I spent the first month working out what to put in it. This is the must have list for a new owner, grouped by when each one is worth buying.
Worth ordering before the car arrives
Two things I would order as soon as a delivery date lands, so they are waiting at home when the car is. Both come from Rivian’s own catalog. I do not quote prices, because they move; rivian.com has the current ones.
- All-weather floor mats: The carpet is the first thing to get ruined, usually by whatever you tracked in on your shoes. Molded mats catch it instead, and you can pull them out and hose them off.
- A home charger: The Rivian Wall Charger uses NACS, so it plugs straight into the car with no adapter. If you have somewhere to put one, it changes more about owning the car than anything else on this page: you plug in overnight and the battery is full every morning.
Worth adding in the first week
One thing waited until I had been living with the car, because it answers a problem you do not notice on a test drive.
- A center console organizer: The armrest cubby is one deep open bin, so sunglasses, cards and a charging cable end up in a pile at the bottom of it. A tray gives the small things a level of their own and leaves the depth underneath free.
What can wait
Everything else I looked at is trip equipment. The roof crossbars, the cargo box, the rooftop tent and the spare tire kit are all genuinely useful, and none of them earn their keep in a normal week. Order them when you have a trip that needs them, and put the money into the daily things first.
Questions about must haves for the R2
What accessories does a new Rivian R2 actually need?
Strictly, none. The car is complete as it arrives. The ones I use every day are the floor mats, the home charger and the console tray, and everything past those depends on how you drive.
What should I buy first for a Rivian R2?
A home charger, if you have anywhere to put one. Every other accessory improves one corner of the car. Charging at home changes the routine: the battery is full every morning, and public charging turns into something you only think about on a road trip.
Do Rivian R1T or R1S accessories work as R2 must haves?
Mostly no. The R2 interior is shaped differently, so cabin parts made for the R1T or R1S do not seat properly. The compatibility line on a listing is the quickest check, and the R2 accessories guide on this site goes through what to look for.
Are must have accessories for the Rivian R2 expensive?
The everyday ones are at the affordable end of the catalog. I do not quote prices here because they move; rivian.com lists current numbers for the factory gear, and the aftermarket sits below that.
