Rivian R2 storage
I love my R2, and part of what sold me was how much it carries for its size. Rivian quotes generous numbers and they hold up. What the numbers do not tell you is what each space is best at, so here is a rundown of the main compartments.
Cargo capacity
- Frunk
- 5.2 cu ft, and it opens hands-free. The tub is roughly 52″ wide by 18″ front to back by 12″ deep, measured by owners rather than published.
- Cargo, seats up
- 28.7 cu ft
- Cargo, seats folded
- 79.4 cu ft
- Hatch opening
- About 29″ wide, measured by owners rather than published.
- Underfloor well
- Taken up by the optional spare tire kit. Free space if you skip it.
Cabin storage
There are small compartments spread through the cabin, but the center console holds most of the usable volume.
- Dual gloveboxes
- Two separate compartments in the dash. Useful for documents and other flat items.
- Center console drawer
- Slides out from beneath the armrest, and it is large enough to take a bag or a purse.
- Armrest cubby
- A deep open bin under the armrest lid, left clear so the full volume is usable.
- Pop-out cupholders
- They sit flush in the console until you need them, so an organizer has to be shaped to clear them.
Getting more out of the armrest cubby
Rivian put real effort into carrying capacity, and it shows everywhere you look. The frunk is shaped to take cases flat, the load floor is square and usable, and the cabin follows the same thinking. The console gives you one large open volume instead of a set of small fixed compartments, which is the right call for a car people actually load up.
The armrest cubby is part of that. It is deep and open, and it will take a bag, a camera, or a jacket without complaint. What I wanted on top of that was somewhere for the small things I carry every day: sunglasses, some cash, a couple of cards, a charging cable. Left loose, they settle at the bottom of all that depth. So I designed a tray that sits partway down and gives them a spot of their own, while the space underneath stays free for everything the cubby was already good at.
Rivian R2 storage questions
How much cargo space does the Rivian R2 have?
Rivian lists 28.7 cubic feet behind the rear seats, 79.4 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down, and another 5.2 cubic feet in the frunk. That is more than most of the compact and midsize electric SUVs it gets compared against.
How big is the Rivian R2 frunk?
Rivian lists 5.2 cubic feet, and it opens hands-free. Owners measuring the tub put it at roughly 52 inches wide by 18 front to back by 12 deep. It is a wide shallow rectangle rather than a narrow well, so cases and bins can lie flat in it.
Does the Rivian R2 have center console storage?
It has two compartments, stacked. There is a deep open cubby under the armrest lid, and a drawer that slides out below it. Both are left open so the full volume is usable, which is also what makes them a natural place to add a tray.
Will a large dog crate fit in a Rivian R2?
Yes, most will fit comfortably. The cargo area is generous, and the seats fold flat if you need the full length. If you have an enormous crate, it is worth measuring it against the hatch opening first, since that is the narrowest point on the way in.
